College Savings Isn't Just About College Anymore: What Florida Parents Should Know

Many families still think 529 plans are only for college, but Florida Prepaid's education savings options offer flexibility for a broader range of qualified educational expenses and pathways
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Sept. 17, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and changing workforce needs are reshaping the future faster than ever before. For parents of young children, that presents a challenge: preparing for a future that is increasingly difficult to predict.
As National College Savings Month is recognized this month, many families are discovering that education savings have evolved as well. While 529 plans are often associated with traditional four-year degrees, today's plans can support a broader range of educational pathways and qualified expenses, helping families keep more options open for the future. Depending on the plan and applicable law, qualified withdrawals from 529 plans can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, certain room-and-board expenses, registered apprenticeship programs, certain K-12 expenses, educational testing costs and limited student loan repayment.
Today's students have more pathways available after high school than ever before. Advancements in technology and artificial intelligence are creating new opportunities while transforming existing careers. Many of today's parents are raising children who will not enter the workforce for another 10, 15 or even 20 years, making it impossible to know exactly what education and training may be required in the future.
"Parents don't have to predict the future to prepare for it," said Kevin Thompson, Executive Director of the Florida Prepaid College Board. "Whether a child ultimately attends a university, pursues technical training, earns an industry credential, or follows another educational path, the most important thing families can do is save, start early, and keep opportunities open."
What Can Qualified 529 Plan Funds Help Cover?
Depending on the plan and qualified use, eligible 529 plan funds can help cover certain qualified education expenses, including:
- College and university tuition
- Required fees, books and supplies
- Certain room-and-board expenses
- Graduate and professional school programs
- Registered apprenticeship programs
- Certain qualified K-12 expenses
- Certain educational and testing expenses permitted under applicable law
- Limited student loan repayment
For parents of younger children, these expanded uses can provide additional flexibility as a child's interests and educational needs evolve over time. What begins as saving for college can also support a broader range of qualified educational opportunities along the way.
"The reality is that none of us knows exactly what the future will look like for today's young children," Thompson said. "What parents can do is take small steps now that help create opportunities later. That's really what planning is all about."
One of the most valuable tools families have is time. Starting early gives families more time to build savings toward future education expenses and create greater flexibility as opportunities evolve.
For Florida families, planning can begin whenever they are ready. With Florida Prepaid's year-round enrollment and education savings options available throughout the year, parents and grandparents can begin preparing for future educational opportunities when it makes the most sense for their family.
While no one can predict exactly what the future will look like, understanding today's education savings options can help families prepare for tomorrow's possibilities and keep more doors open for the next generation.
