QINGDAO, China, Sept. 30, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- At the offshore construction site of the Qingdao Marine Energy Integration Industrial Park, 3,500-tonne concrete caissons were recently towed into position by tugboats, submerged and released with centimeter-level GPS accuracy, forming the foundation for the breakwater.

Each caisson measures 16 meters long, 24 meters wide and 15 meters high. Its skeleton is woven from 150 tonnes of reinforcing steel, assembled on high-precision tying jigs and lifted with self-developed rigging. The pouring cycle can be completed in as little as a single day.

The project's chief engineer said the team carried out flotation stability calculations in advance, repeatedly checking the towing attitude at an 8.7-metre draft and timing all construction operations to the tide tables. The process covers airbag jacking, on-site transfer, floating-dock loading, towing and GPS-guided installation. A self-developed PLC-based automated ballasting system and intelligent management platform provide real-time monitoring of underwater position and settlement.

At a pace of one caisson every two days, 34 units will be installed to form a 675-meter breakwater protecting 370 mu (24.7 hectares) of reclaimed land.

Located in Jimo District, the Qingdao Marine Energy Integration Industrial Park focuses on high-end sectors including energy equipment manufacturing, commercialization of marine research, clean energy and port logistics. Its infrastructure will deliver a supporting wharf for an integrated energy base combining offshore wind, photovoltaics and hydrogen, making it a key component of Qingdao's new energy industry cluster.
