Fairless Hills, United States - December 18, 2023 / Michael's Jewelers - Fairless Hills, PA /

Humanity has written countless phrases about the beauty and endurance of diamonds since we discovered them in the wild millennia ago, and for good reason. Diamonds are known for their shine, their incredible hardness, and even the way they seem to elevate even the simplest ensemble into something special. Whether you have your eye on something fancy or are seeking to give class and sophistication to someone special, Michael's Jewelers is your best source for diamond rings in Fairless Hills, PA. For a better understanding of our diamonds and what we can do with them, please keep reading.

Natural Diamonds

Regardless of how you refer to them, the fact remains that natural diamonds are crafted by the most experienced craftsman: Mother Nature. Created by Earth and then refined by human hands to give them their cut and carat, the color and clarity are still up to the whims of nature. These four aspects are known as the "four Cs of diamonds."

Man Made Diamonds

The very first point about lab-grown diamonds is that they are not a replica, facsimile, or imitation of a diamond. The only distinction from natural diamonds is that the crystalline structure of a lab-grown diamond is engineered within the controlled conditions of a laboratory instead of being left to the whims of nature. There are two approaches to achieving this goal, known as "HPHT" and "CVD."

HPHT (High Pressure/High Temperature)

Unsurprisingly, HPHT diamonds are the product of intense pressure and temperatures. The process starts by placing a tiny diamond seed within the carbon. Next, that diamond-carbon amalgam is exposed to 2700°F and 1.5 million PSI (pounds per square inch). How the heat and pressure are achieved depends on the lab in question and may involve a belt press, split-sphere "BARS" press, or cubic press. This intensely heated and stressful process results in additional diamond material being converted from the carbon surrounding the seed, attaching to the seed, and yielding an engineered diamond.

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)

This method also involves diamond seeding, but the seed is thinner than what HPHT diamonds require; indeed, it is not uncommon to source CVD seeds from HPHT diamonds. This process starts by storing the seed within a gas chamber and then raising its temperature to 1500°F. After that point, the chamber is flooded with carbon-rich gasses, like methane and carbon dioxide. The gasses then become ionized by the extreme temperature, effectively losing their carbon atoms and handing them off to progress the seed into a diamond of pure carbon.

Which to Choose?

We understand that the additional choice of a natural diamond vs a lab-grown one can be tough to make, but we would be happy to help you decide. Some clients favor the classic aesthetic of a natural stone, while others appreciate having control over all four Cs regarding their diamond rings in Fairless Hills, PA
